The Art of Landscape Design

Colorful PerennialsLandscape design is an art of layers.  When it comes to style, Green Life Studios' designers look at your home's architecture and community.  While we want your landscape to have a "fresh" look, we also want it to feel in harmony with your house, its setting, the architecture and plant communities native to your area.  Such design principles make your landscape feel more like "home", giving your yard a sense of place that builds memories, harmony, and a sense of uniqueness.  So for San Diegans, we design yards that look like California, rather than Hawai'i or Kentucky, where water is abundant.  Instead we like tucking in low water plants like fragrant sages, creeping lilacs and soft aloes amongst rocks or showy penstemons against walls.  We design hummingbirds and butterflies right in!

Changing Landscape Traditions

Over decades, Californians developed their own traditions for landscape, borrowing precedents from others while creating their own.  California's traditions and innovations achieved their fullest expression in the hands of architects such as Cliff May, Thomas Church, Garrett Eckbo and Lawrence Halprin. Today, Californians are embracing native landscapes -- full of color, fragrance, butterflies, birds aBackyard Bocce Courtnd wildlife -- as well as bocce courts, yoga decks, edible landscaping, pizza ovens and rain gardens.  Every design seeks to interpret the best of California's traditions, while introducing new ones.
