Climate-wise California is like the Mediterranean -- France, Spain, Morroco, Italy and Greece -- plus parts of Australia, Chile and South Africa, where rainless summers host beautiful plants of all kinds. Search this gallery for plants on San Diego's "Nifty 50" and UC Davis Arboretum All-Star lists, and see why Green Life Studios favors Mediterranean- and California-adapted plants in its designs. |

Golden Barrel Cactus
Echinocactus grussoniiHumorously called "Mother in Law's Cushion', this globe shaped cactus is easy to grow in mild climates and is the most loved of the prickly cactus family. Seen reaching a size mostly between 1 and 2 feet, after many years, the barrels grow as tall as 3 feet and produce a crown of yellow flowers. Appreciates some shade in most California climates. Hardy to about 20 degrees. F. Excess water leads to rot. The best California specimens are worth seeing at the Huntington Botanical Gardens in San Marino.
