Climate-wise California is like the Mediterranean -- France, Spain, Morroco, Italy and Greece -- plus parts of Australia, Chile and South Africa, where rainless summers host beautiful plants of all kinds. Search this gallery for plants on San Diego's "Nifty 50" and UC Davis Arboretum All-Star lists, and see why Green Life Studios favors Mediterranean- and California-adapted plants in its designs. |

Western Spice Bush
Calycanthus occidentalis"California native plant; maroon-red flowers attract pollinating beetles; leaves have a sharp, clean fragrance and turn yellow in the autumn, adding seasonal color to the garden."-UC Davis Arboretum All-Stars
Western Spice Bush is a bright green shrub boasting wine-red flowers with a matching red wine fragrance. Beautiful in shady woodland gardens and along creeks. A California Native, this selection should be reserved for large, cool spaces and accompanied by other woodland species such as the white-flowered Carpenteria and California Bay. Tolerates sand, clay, wet feet and seasonal flooding. Sunset Zones 4-9, 14-24.
