Climate-wise California is like the Mediterranean -- France, Spain, Morroco, Italy and Greece -- plus parts of Australia, Chile and South Africa, where rainless summers host beautiful plants of all kinds. Search this gallery for plants on San Diego's "Nifty 50" and UC Davis Arboretum All-Star lists, and see why Green Life Studios favors Mediterranean- and California-adapted plants in its designs. |

Sago Palm
Cycas revolutaOccupying the Northern Hemisphere since distant times, this slow growing "palm" is kept as a houseplant in many places, grown outside in most California climates. Very low maintenance unless you have poor soil. Use in moderate water shade gardens in hot climates, part sun on coast. Great next to Bird of Paradise and Natal Plum, alone as a specimen plant or in a pot. Poisonous to animals and children silly enough to chew on them. Killed by overwatering. In poor soil, needs palm fertilizer.
