Climate-wise California is like the Mediterranean -- France, Spain, Morroco, Italy and Greece -- plus parts of Australia, Chile and South Africa, where rainless summers host beautiful plants of all kinds. Search this gallery for plants on San Diego's "Nifty 50" and UC Davis Arboretum All-Star lists, and see why Green Life Studios favors Mediterranean- and California-adapted plants in its designs. |

Creeping Sage
Salvia sonomensisNaturally gracing coastal slopes and Sierra foothills of California, this uber-short California native sage forms an aromatic carpet 6 inches high. With lilac blue flowers May through June, it can be knocked down by too much heat, and so should have some afternoon shade in hotter climates. Attracts the best in garden visitors: birds, hummers, bees, butterflies and humans.
